Coffins scattered across N3

Nov 07 2009 10:59 AM

Midlands - A man was seriously injured when three trucks collided on the N3 in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, paramedics said on Saturday.

One lane was closed for over two hours while coffins, strewn across the roadway were being cleared, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks.

"It is thought that a heavy goods vehicle had slowed down and pulled to the road's shoulder within the yellow line, with a second articulated truck, carrying a payload of coffins, followed suit."

A third truck failed to stop in time and slammed into the truck carrying coffins and it collided with the stationary one. The passenger in the truck carrying coffins was trapped inside and the Jaws of Life were used to free him.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

No other person was injured in the accident which occurred at around 20:00 on Friday.
